THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL
There’s watching the ball, and there’s watching the ball! Here you see current world #1, Dina Safina, following the ball 100% into her racket as she is about to strike a backhand. It doesn’t get any better than this regarding what I like to refer to as “direct tracking.”
Unfortunately, club players are often unaware that they are only seeing the ball in their periphery, i.e. “peripheral sighting.” You’ll still be able to make contact, but you can forget about hitting balls cleanly and consistently.
And what is the exact purpose of watching the ball: to make contact at the optimal moment, the right place at the right time as you perceive it.
The difference between these two ball watching approaches is minute, a split second at best, but it will make or break your performance. Learning to recognize when your “watching” is only peripheral, and correcting it immediately, is an absolute must if you’re going to dial-in your A-game every time out.
Blind individuals, with a little help, can, and actually do, play golf with a static ball just sitting there. Clearly this is not the case in tennis with the ball flying through the air in a dizzying array of speeds, spins, trajectories, and bounces. Avoid playing partially blind.
